The novels in the “Medieval Sea Adventures of the Mediterranean, Lovers of the Sea” have stories that stand alone and the novels can be enjoyed without reading the other two books of the series. However, the reader can experience the growth of the same characters across all the novels, if they read them chronologically.
A real character in the historical record, a 13th-century Genoese sailor named Ponzio Bastone falls in love with the adventurous Esmeray. Bastone works as a spy for Giovanni Procida, the mastermind of the revolt of the Sicilian Vespers. The couple joins the patriots in the revolt to free Sicily from the Angevins.
They sail across the Mediterranean Sea, commanding a ship trading between Sicily and North Africa. They face danger and crises, overcoming many challenges working together. They also are blessed with a daughter.
Esmeray, Bastone, and their daughter Aspasia navigate their trade ship between Spain and the Canary Islands. They become involved in the Genoese struggles to maintain a trading colony on Lanzarote, the easternmost Canary Island.
